Onycholysis is separation of the nail from the bed. Medications or harsh chemicals can cause it, and thyroid disease is sometimes involved. It often starts at the free edge and moves inward, creating a white or opaque gap where air enters. Other causes include psoriasis, fungus, trauma, and certain drugs such as tetracyclines. Frequent manicures or long water exposure can worsen it. Treatment depends on the cause: keep nails dry, clean, and protected, avoid aggravating actions, and let the plate grow out. When a systemic disorder like a thyroid condition is responsible, treating that issue helps prevent return.
