These amazing rats have evolved complex systems to fit different temperature environments. They use their swimming skills during wet seasons to reach food supplies that surface in flooded areas. When surface vegetation is limited, they will dig for roots and tubers and concentrate their urine to save water in dry seasons. Their fur structure varies seasonally; it gets denser in cooler months and lighter in hot ones.
