4. GPS-Aided Navigation



Precision targeting took a radical advance when Global Positioning System technology was included into missile guiding systems. To reach amazing degrees of accuracy, this system combines inertial guiding with satellite navigation information. Even at distances more than thousands of kilometres, GPS-aided missiles can precisely hit targets measured in meters. The technology has made it possible for operators to launch missiles without continuous guidance control, hence enabling "fire-and-forget" capabilities.
